TBS has booked five straight hours of The Big Bang Theory, starting at 4pm ET and running through the 8:30pm half hour, and that is the whole shape of the evening. Ten back-to-back episodes of one sitcom is not a schedule so much as a standing offer, and it works if you already know which of those ten you like. The run is all from season three, with the 8pm ET (7pm Central) episode being S03E14 and the 8:30pm ET one S03E15.

It is a stronger offer than the competition at 8pm suggests. Dancing with the Stars is on ABC, Below Deck on Bravo, FBI on CBS and Holiday Baking Championship on Food Network, so anyone who wants something light and familiar has one obvious home.

The morning belongs to Friends, from 10am ET to 4pm ET, and it deserves a mention because the run crosses a season line. At 11am ET the schedule moves into season eight with S08E01, and by 3:30pm it has reached S08E10. If you want that stretch in one go, it is the cleanest block of the day. Before it, Young Sheldon holds the early morning and The Office the overnight.

At 9pm ET, TBS switches to Foul Play with Anthony Davis and airs it twice, at 9pm and 9:43pm ET, each 43 minutes. TBS isn’t saying much about what it is, and the double slot suggests TBS is using it to bridge from the sitcoms to the late block rather than to anchor anything.

The late block is the better reason to stay. Impractical Jokers starts at 10:26pm ET and runs three times in a row, at 10:26, 10:57 and 11:28. It is a reality comedy with a loyal following (287 episodes across 12 series), and a triple helping is the right way to schedule it. Against Beat Bobby Flay, The Daily Show and Housewives of Potomac, it is the easiest laugh on offer.

Verdict: Impractical Jokers is the pick. The Big Bang Theory is a fine default until then.
