Action & AdventureWhat’s on ION tonight? Here is the full ION schedule for Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with times in Eastern Time (ET).
ION turns its Tuesday into a Chicago Fire marathon
ION has handed most of the day to one show. Chicago Fire runs every hour from 11am ET to 6pm ET, then again every hour from 7pm ET to 11pm ET. That is thirteen episodes in a single day, and the primetime hours are where it matters.
The 7pm ET episode is listed as season 14, episode 1, “Kicking Down Doors”, and the next three follow in order: “Primary Search” at 8pm ET, “In the Blood” at 9pm ET and “Mercy” at 10pm ET. Four straight hours of the current-season run, in sequence, means anyone who wants to catch up can sit down at 7pm and work through to 11pm without missing a step. I’d start at 7pm if you want the full run, or at 8pm ET if you only have the evening. The 8pm episode is my pick, simply because it’s the first of the primetime block and the point where most people will join.
Chicago Fire is an American drama that began on NBC, with 15 series and 295 episodes to date. Everything else on its schedule tonight orbits it. The earlier afternoon episodes are from season 6 (S06E04 through S06E12, with the last one back at 11pm ET), so the channel is mixing eras across the day. The primetime hours are the newer material.
Against it, the network is up against Dancing with the Stars on ABC, NCIS on CBS and Moonshiners on Discovery at 8pm ET. By 9pm ET and 10pm ET it faces NCIS: New York and NCIS: Origins on CBS. ION is playing the long game here: one show, four hours, and an easy way to stay put.
The overnight belongs to Chicago P.D. at midnight, 1am and 2am ET (season 10, episodes 2 to 4). Law & Order: Special Victims Unit takes over from 6am to 10am ET, running through season 14, episodes 2 to 6. After that it is paid programming, plus Through the Bible with Les Feldick in the early hours.
If it’s a Chicago Fire night, it’s a good one. If it isn’t, there is not much else here to fall back on, and ION isn’t pretending otherwise.

One show, all day: the marathon channel
ION does not have a schedule in the usual sense. It has a marathon. Most days it picks one crime drama and runs it for twelve to twenty hours straight, then switches to another the next morning. Across the two weeks we tracked, a single day on ION often carried 13 or more episodes of the same show back to back, and on Sundays NCIS ran 18 times from 6am into the small hours.
That makes ION one of the most repetitive channels we measure and also one of the easiest to read. Some 95% of its airtime went to titles that returned on three or more days, and nearly all of it was procedural drama: action and suspense series made up over 90% of what it showed. Films are essentially absent.
What a day on ION looks like
The ION day starts at 6am, and the pattern is set by the day of the week rather than by the hour. Across both weeks we tracked, the lineup repeated almost exactly:
- Monday: NCIS from 6am, Chicago Fire from 11am, Chicago P.D. from 7pm through the night.
- Tuesday: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from 6am, then Chicago Fire from 11am until 3am.
- Wednesday: SVU in the morning, then Blue Bloods from 11am until 3am.
- Thursday: NCIS in the morning, then FBI from 10am through the night.
- Friday: Xploration Awesome Planet from 7am, then S.W.A.T. from 10am through the night.
- Saturday: SVU, most of the day.
- Sunday: NCIS, all day.
So the show on at 9pm is whichever marathon is running that day, and the same is true at 9am. Primetime on ION is not a separate block with its own programming. It is simply the middle of the marathon.
The one regular interruption is sport. On some Saturdays in season, NWSL soccer takes the evening, with a pregame show, a match, a halftime show and a postgame show, before the marathon resumes.
Between 3am and 6am the channel turns over to paid programming: infomercials, injury-lawyer ads, health products and religious shows such as Through the Bible with Les Feldick at 4:30am.
Popular shows on ION
NCIS is a military police procedural that first aired in 2003 and has run for 24 seasons, with Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette and Sean Murray among its cast. It is ION’s most-used show, filling Sundays and several weekday mornings.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit began in 1999 and stars Mariska Hargitay, with Ice-T among its long-running cast. At 27 seasons it has enough episodes to carry ION’s Saturdays and two weekday mornings without strain.
Chicago Fire is a drama that started in 2012, with Jesse Spencer and Monica Raymund among its cast. It gets two long runs a week, on Monday and Tuesday. Chicago P.D., the police procedural that began in 2014 with Jason Beghe, takes Monday evening and night.
Blue Bloods is a police procedural that began in 2010 and has 14 seasons, with Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan in the cast. It owns Wednesday from 11am.
FBI is a crime drama that started in 2018, with Missy Peregrym and Zeeko Zaki, and fills Thursday from mid-morning.
S.W.A.T. is a crime drama that ran from 2017 to 2025 over eight seasons, starring Shemar Moore. It takes Friday from 10am through the night.
How to watch ION
ION is free over the air with an antenna. It also streams live at no cost on several free, ad-supported streaming services, so it is one of the easier channels to find without any subscription.
It is carried on most of the major live TV streaming services as well. Availability on any one service can change, so check the channel list of the one you use.
Channels like ION
- USA Network is the closest cable match, with long daily runs of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Chicago P.D.
- TNT also leans on procedural marathons, with FBI and Cold Case in long blocks before its evening films.
- CBS is where NCIS, FBI and their spin-offs air as part of a weekly primetime lineup.
- NBC runs the Chicago and Law & Order dramas in their weekly slots, one episode a night.
- Hallmark Mystery offers the gentler version of the all-day crime habit, with long runs of Murder, She Wrote.
Who it’s for
ION is for people who want to put a familiar crime show on and leave it there. If NCIS or SVU is your comfort viewing, ION will give you a whole day of it, free. It is a poor choice for anyone looking for something new, a film, a comedy or the news, because none of those are really part of the channel.
What’s on ION each day?
It depends on the day of the week. Sundays are NCIS all day, Saturdays are mostly SVU, and weekdays switch between Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Blue Bloods, FBI and S.W.A.T. after a morning of NCIS or SVU.
How can I watch ION for free?
With an antenna, or live on several free, ad-supported streaming services. No cable or subscription is needed.
Does ION show movies?
Rarely, if at all. Across the two weeks we tracked, ION showed no feature films. Almost everything it shows is episodic crime drama.
What time does the ION marathon start?
Most days the marathon starts at 6am ET, sometimes switching to a second show at 10am or 11am, and runs until about 3am.
