From 4pm ET until the schedule ends at midnight, every half hour on TBS is The Big Bang Theory. That is sixteen episodes in a row, and the useful part is where it starts. At 6pm ET the channel goes back to the Pilot, then runs the first season in order: The Big Bran Hypothesis, The Fuzzyboots Corollary, The Luminous Fish Effect, and into primetime with The Hamburger Postulate at 8pm ET.

That ordering is the reason to tune in. Most sitcom blocks scatter episodes across seasons. Here the first season plays straight through, episode one to episode twelve, so anyone curious about how a 12-season CBS sitcom began can watch it unfold in order. Primetime runs S01E05 to S01E10, and the late slots finish the run with The Pancake Batter Anomaly and The Jerusalem Duality at 11pm and 11:30pm ET. The early evening is the stronger entry point than the 8pm start, since the Pilot is at 6pm.

The opposition is heavy. At 8pm ET the show faces Dancing with the Stars on ABC, NCIS on CBS and The Real Housewives of New York City on Bravo, and by 10pm there is little else on broadcast that matches a half-hour comedy. If you are after something quick and familiar, TBS is the easy option.

Four sitcoms, around the clock

TBS is a sitcom channel, and a narrow one. Comedy filled 95% of its airtime across the two weeks we tracked, and most of that came from four shows: Friends, The Office, The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. Friends alone aired 199 times in fifteen days, on every single one of them. That is roughly thirteen episodes a day of one show.

Nobody should mistake that for a weakness the channel is hiding. It is the plan. TBS sells familiarity: half-hour comedies that people already know, in long blocks that can be joined at any point and left at any point. A typical day holds about 41 programmes, close to the maximum a 24-hour channel can fit in half-hour slots, and 84% of airtime went to titles that came back on three or more days.

What its day looks like

There is no real daytime or late-night split on TBS, only a rotation of blocks. Young Sheldon tends to open the morning around 7am ET. Friends takes over late morning, usually from about 11am, and often runs for hours. The Big Bang Theory commonly holds the late afternoon from about 4:30pm. The Office is the overnight show, most often found from around 2am, though it also drifts into the evening on some days.

Primetime is more of the same until a live event arrives. On an ordinary night The Big Bang Theory starts the evening at 7pm ET and keeps going: it was on in primetime on eleven of fifteen nights, 40 airings in all. Impractical Jokers picks up a 10pm slot now and then, and Family Matters and American Dad! fill odd early-morning gaps.

The exceptions are live events, and in autumn they are big ones. During baseball’s postseason, TBS carries playoff games in primetime: a pregame show (MLB on TBS Leadoff) at 7:30pm, the game from 8pm, and a postgame show (MLB on TBS Closer) when it finishes, which can be 11:30pm or later.
