Four days before Halloween, Freeform is running a day of spooky comedy movies, and the best of them is saved for primetime: Tim Burton’s 1988 Beetlejuice at 9pm ET/PT (8pm Central). It is the easy 5-star pick.

Beetlejuice at 9pm

Beetlejuice runs 120 minutes and stars Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O’Hara. It sits in a crowded hour, with NCIS: New York on CBS, Family Guy on Comedy Central and The Drop: A Snowfall Saga on FX all starting at the same time. It is the right film for the slot, and when it ends at 11pm the channel goes straight to The 700 Club, so this is the night’s only primetime event. It airs again on October 28, so a viewer who misses it has a second chance tomorrow.

The Addams Family run

The early evening belongs to the Addams films. Freeform runs on Boy Meets World in the morning and family films at night

Freeform, the channel formerly known as ABC Family, has one of the most repetitive schedules we measured, and it is repetitive on purpose. Across the two weeks we tracked, 84% of its airtime went to titles that came back on three or more days. Weekday mornings belong to a 1990s sitcom, the middle of the morning to a talk program, and everything from late morning to 11pm ET to films.

The films in the window were seasonal. In the run-up to Halloween, Freeform’s movie slots turn over to spooky family titles: Hocus Pocus, Casper, The Addams Family, Beetlejuice, Tim Burton’s catalog and both Haunted Mansion films. That is the October version of the channel, not the year-round one. The structure around the films is the part that holds.

What its day looks like

A Freeform weekday follows almost the same template every time.

  • Midnight to 2am ET: four episodes of Boy Meets World.
  • 2am to 7am: paid programming and infomercials, with The 700 Club at 3am.
  • 7am to 9am: four more episodes of Boy Meets World, sometimes a fifth at 10:30am.
  • 9am: The 700 Club, followed at 10am by 700 Club Interactive, both in the same slot every weekday.
  • 10:30am or 11am to 11pm: films, back to back, usually four or five of them.

Weekends drop most of the sitcom and talk programming. Films rose from a third of weekday airtime to 79% at weekends, and a Saturday often runs films from 7am or 9:30am straight through to the early hours.

Freeform’s films do not rotate widely. Hocus Pocus aired eight times in fifteen days, sometimes in primetime and sometimes at lunchtime. Casper aired six times, Edward Scissorhands five, and The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, Beetlejuice, Dark Shadows, Little Shop of Horrors, Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2 and The Nightmare Before Christmas four times each.
