Halloween night belongs to the movie channels, and 9pm ET is where it gets decided

Saturday, October 31 is the one night of the year when cable stops pretending to have a schedule and runs a horror marathon instead. The networks mostly sit it out, so the real choice is between live baseball and a stack of scary movies, and the best hour to commit to is 9pm ET.

The pick: Halloween II on AMC at 9pm ET

Halloween II (1981) runs two hours on AMC, and it is the cleanest answer to the question of what to put on on this particular night. The competition at 9pm is Scary Movie 2 on Bravo, which is the lighter option, and Creepshow on SundanceTV, which is the better rival and the only real argument against the pick. Creepshow (1982) is the older-school alternative for anyone who wants something with a bit more chill. Halloween II is the one for a proper sit-down. Four stars.

What you give up: the World Series on FOX, which has been on since 8pm ET (5pm PT) and runs a 180-minute slot. Live baseball does not wait, and it is the only thing on the night that cannot be caught later. If the game matters to you, it beats everything else on this page. If it doesn’t, 9pm is when the horror channels hit their stride.

The 8pm hour is a pile-up

Eight o’clock is crowded with films that could each carry an evening. FX has Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and follows it with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) at 10:30pm ET, which makes a tidy double bill for a household that wants spooky without being frightening. Syfy has Halloween Kills (2021) at 8pm and Halloween (2007) at 10:30pm ET, so a viewer who goes with AMC at 9pm can still pick up the Syfy’s late film. TBS runs Jaws 2 (1978) and then The Batman (2022) at 10:15pm ET. TCM is the one for people who want something older: Dracula (1979) at 8pm ET, and Phantom of the Paradise (1974) at 10:15pm ET.

Of those, TCM’s late film is the best-kept secret. Phantom of the Paradise is the least obvious title on the whole night, and it sits at a time when most of the other channels are winding down into their second or third horror sequel. Four stars.

Something gentler, and something stranger

Families have a clear run at 9:30pm ET. Disney Channel has Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge (2001) and Freeform has Hocus Pocus 2 (2022), both at the same moment. Freeform’s slot is 150 minutes, so it is the longer commitment, and it is the more recent film. Disney Channel’s is the older of the two, from 2001.

Two things hide in the 10pm ET row. MeTV has Svengoolie, a natural fit for the date. And Hallmark Channel is already on Christmas, with Adopting St. Nick at 8pm ET and The Spirit of Halloween at 10pm ET, a reminder that its calendar runs well ahead of everyone else’s.

Food Network and Discovery have gone all in on the theme as well. Halloween Baking Championship fills the whole of primetime on Food Network, and Discovery has three straight Expedition X episodes from 8pm ET.

The short answer

If you want one thing, watch Halloween II on AMC at 9pm ET. If you are a baseball fan, FOX has the World Series from 8pm ET (5pm PT) and that is that.
