EntertainmentWhat’s on Discovery tonight? Here is the full Discovery schedule for Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with times in Eastern Time (ET).
Discovery gives Moonshiners the whole afternoon and lets primetime tail off
Moonshiners owns Discovery’s evening, and the 8pm ET hour is the best of it. “Hillbilly Scotch” (S16E05) is the fifth of five consecutive episodes that begin with the season opener at 4pm, so anyone who has stayed with the channel since the afternoon arrives at 8pm with the full run behind them. It runs 61 minutes against Dancing with the Stars on ABC and the World Series on Fox. Three stars, and the pick.
Moonshiners is an American docu-soap that first aired on Discovery Channel, so this is the network’s own territory. The channel also gave it the whole of the morning, with four hours of Moonshiners: Master Distiller from 6am to 10am ET.
After 8pm the night loses its shape. Secret Life of a Vegas Casino takes the 9:01pm ET slot, the same show that filled four hours from noon, so the afternoon reruns and the primetime hour are the same programme at different times. That is a scheduling choice, not a highlight.
The last two hours are the odd ones. Filthy Fortunes airs “Amping Up the Mess and Money” (S01E04) at 10:02pm ET and “Betting Big on Little Balls” (S01E01) at 11:02pm. Episode four before episode one is a strange way to introduce a series, and I would not start there. Two stars.

Gold, ghosts and the great outdoors
Discovery is an unscripted channel built on franchises: Gold Rush and its spin-offs, Moonshiners, Deadliest Catch, Naked and Afraid, and a run of Expedition titles that lean toward the unexplained. Working-life reality fills much of the day, while expedition and paranormal series take a lot of its evenings. Documentary and reality together took close to 60% of airtime in the two weeks we tracked, and almost everything else was adventure and suspense in the same unscripted vein.
What Discovery does not have is a backbone. No single title aired on most days in the window. Moonshiners, Gold Rush, Secret Life of a Vegas Casino and Rocky Mountain Wreckers each turned up on seven days of fifteen, and that was the most anything managed. The schedule is a rotation of franchises shown in runs, so a show that fills an afternoon one day can be absent for the next three.
What its day looks like
A Discovery day carries about 23 programmes, mostly hour-long, and 76% of airtime goes to titles that come back on three or more days.
The early hours run on the channel’s working-life series: Gold Rush: White Water around 4am ET, Deadliest Catch at 5am on the days it aired (the same slot each time), then Moonshiners, Rocky Mountain Wreckers or Mysteries of the Abandoned around 6am. Mid-morning often belongs to Gold Rush (around 9am) or Caught!, which aired 20 times on just two days.
Afternoons tilt toward spectacle and law enforcement. Gold Rush: Mine Rescue with Freddy & Juan and 120 Hours Behind Bars take early afternoon, Secret Life of a Vegas Casino around 2pm, and Expedition Unknown, Expedition Files or Naked and Afraid around 4pm. Contraband: Seized at the Border and In the Eye of the Storm usually take 6pm.
Primetime, 8 to 11pm ET, is the least predictable part of the day. Discovery often runs a single franchise as a marathon from 7pm: one evening it was How It’s Made eight times over, another it was In the Eye of the Storm or Conspiracies & Coverups. Expedition X most often holds 8pm and aired 30 times in the window. Later, the 9pm and 10pm hours went to Secret Life of a Vegas Casino, Rocky Mountain Wreckers, Filthy Fortunes, Ghost Adventures and Gold Rush: Mine Rescue, some of them starting a few minutes past the hour.
Weekends are spookier and wilder. Suspense rose from 8% of weekday airtime to 24% at weekends, and adventure from 11% to 22%, while straight documentary fell from 38% to 21%. Some of that paranormal lean may be seasonal, since the window we measured ran up to Halloween; treat the ghost-hunting share as an autumn high.
Popular shows on Discovery
Gold Rush is the defining Discovery franchise on this schedule: a reality series that began in 2010 and has run to at least 14 seasons and more than 360 episodes. Its spin-offs, Gold Rush: Mine Rescue with Freddy & Juan and Gold Rush: White Water, aired in the window too, so the franchise was rarely off the schedule for long.
Naked and Afraid is a reality series first aired in 2013, with at least 17 seasons and more than 200 episodes. On Discovery it usually takes afternoon and early-evening runs.
Expedition Unknown is a reality and documentary series that began in 2015, fronted by Josh Gates, first shown on Travel Channel. It aired 19 times in the window, mostly around 4pm and 7pm.
Ghost Adventures is a paranormal docuseries from 2008, also first shown on Travel Channel, with at least 18 seasons and more than 200 episodes. Discovery used it in the 10pm slot.
How It’s Made is a Canadian documentary series that began in 2001 and has passed 30 seasons and 400 episodes. It appears on Discovery in occasional marathons.
Expedition X is a series that began in 2020 and was Discovery’s most-aired title in our window, usually at 8pm ET.

Channels like Discovery
- History is the closest match: documentary and reality nearly all day, with its own taste for the unexplained.
- A&E offers unscripted reality in long blocks too, with police and storage auctions in place of mining.
- HGTV shares the format-driven reality model, applied to houses, and its own seasonal haunted turn.
- TLC is another all-unscripted channel, built around families and relationships.
- PBS gives a large share of its evenings to documentary, for viewers who want the factual side without the reality format.
Who it’s for
Discovery suits viewers who like unscripted series about work and survival, and those who enjoy a search for something that may not be there. It is a weak choice for anyone who wants the same show at the same time each day: in the two weeks we tracked, nothing on Discovery kept a daily slot.
What’s on Discovery most nights?
Usually an unscripted series run as a block from 7pm or 8pm ET, often Expedition X, Gold Rush or Moonshiners, with Ghost Adventures or Filthy Fortunes later on.
Is Gold Rush on Discovery every day?
Not every day. Gold Rush itself aired on seven of the fifteen days we tracked, and its two spin-offs took other slots across the fortnight.
Does Discovery show movies?
Very rarely. Discovery’s schedule is almost entirely unscripted series, with only a few specials a week.
How can I watch Discovery without cable?
Live on YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Philo or DirecTV Stream, or on demand through HBO Max, discovery+ or the Discovery GO app.
