The only schedule move worth noticing on HGTV tonight is House Shock at 9pm ET (8pm Central), a 61-minute slot that sits alone in the middle of an otherwise predictable evening. Everything around it is a known quantity, which makes it the one hour where the channel is asking you to take a chance.

It’s a modest chance. House Shock has turned up on five days across the current window, so it is a fixture of the autumn rather than a debut, and the 61-minute length is the odd detail: it overruns the hour by a minute and pushes House Hunters International to 10:01pm ET. Against it, Discovery’s Secret Life of a Vegas Casino and FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga start at the same moment. If you want the home-makeover itch scratched with a slightly different hook, this is the hour. Three stars, and the pick.

Fixer to Fabulous is the real backbone of the day. Five episodes in a row run from 3pm to 8pm ET, and the 8pm instalment (S07E04, “Fix This Lakeside Dream Home”) makes it a sixth straight hour. HGTV clearly leans on it. It opens primetime against Dancing with the Stars and NCIS, but six hours of anything blurs. Three stars for the 8pm slot, no more.

House Hunters International closes the night with four half-hours from 10:01pm ET, including S204E04, “Cork and a Hard Place,” at 11pm. That is a long way into a franchise, and it plays as late-night wallpaper. Two stars.

Its sister format, House Hunters International, added another 52. Together the two franchises account for a large slice of everything HGTV shows, and the rest of the schedule is built from the same ingredients: buying a house, fixing a house, or selling one.

Reality made up 89% of airtime across the day and 97% in primetime. The remainder is mostly documentary-style property travel such as Beachfront Bargain Hunt. There is no news, no scripted drama and almost no film. That consistency is the channel’s selling point. Whatever time someone switches on HGTV, they will see a house.

What its day looks like

A typical day carries around 33 programmes, which reflects the half-hour length of the house-hunting formats. About 73% of airtime goes to titles that return on three or more days, a lower share than many reality channels, because HGTV rotates a wide stable of renovation series through its daytime.

Overnight, the channel runs reruns of renovation shows such as Crashers around 4am ET, with paid programming in some early-morning slots. Mornings and middays rotate renovation series in blocks: Botched Homes and Renovation Aloha around noon, Home Town and Fixer to Fabulous in early afternoon. The mid-afternoon belongs to dream-home formats, My Lottery Dream Home (35 airings in the window), Love It or List It, 100 Day Dream Home and Beachfront Bargain Hunt, often from about 3pm.
