Football owns Sunday night, and everyone else is playing for second
NBC’s Sunday Night Football is the one thing on tonight’s schedule that has to be watched as it happens, and it is the pick. It starts at 8:15pm ET (5:15pm PT), runs a scheduled 195 minutes, and unlike everything around it, it won’t be there tomorrow in the same form. A rerun of anything else can wait. A live game can’t.
That matters because the opposition is thin. ABC has put Mrs. Doubtfire in the 8:02pm slot, a 1993 movie scheduled for 178 minutes including breaks, which is a long commitment for a night that ends at 11. It’s the sensible choice if the game holds no interest in your house, and it’s the only broadcast network option that fills the whole evening with a single title. CBS doesn’t get going until 8:30pm ET with Marshals, followed by Tracker at 9:30 and Cupertino at 10:30. FOX runs The Simpsons at 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central), then Animal Control, Universal Basic Guys and Grimsburg, and gives up the 10pm hour to local programming.
If you’re giving up the game, you’re giving up the only appointment event of the night. If you’re staying with it, the cost is Mrs. Doubtfire, the whole CBS lineup, and Dexter: Resurrection on Showtime, which airs at both 8pm and 9pm. None of those are going anywhere.
Cable’s best hour is 9:30
Nine thirty is where the cable schedule gets interesting for people who skip football. Bravo opens Married at First Sight with S20E01 (“Forever Starts in Seattle”), and it’s the strongest premiere-style start of the night for anyone who follows the franchise. It sits against The Internship on TNT, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader on Syfy (2010, 150 minutes) and Wichita on Outlaw, a 1955 title that is the quiet curiosity of the hour.
History has a smaller opener later: American Pickers S16E01, “Tough Nut To Crack”, at 10:03pm ET. The channel also runs an earlier American Pickers at 9pm and a Best Of at 8pm, so anyone who wants to start the season fresh has to wait until after 10.
Old-movie fans have a better evening than the schedule’s volume suggests. TCM leads with Strategic Air Command, a 1955 title at 8pm for 120 minutes, and follows it with The Mountain Road (1960) at 10pm. Heroes & Icons has Star Trek S02E01 at 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central), the first episode of the second season, then Star Trek: The Next Generation at 9pm and Deep Space Nine at 10pm. That’s three Star Trek series in a single evening, the most coherent block on the dial.
The comfort wall, and the one to skip
Sitcom loyalists get the easiest night of all. MeTV runs The Golden Girls from 8pm through 9:30pm, four episodes straight from S05E23 to S05E26, and Cozi TV puts Two and a Half Men on every half hour from 8pm to 10:30pm. IFC does the same for Everybody Loves Raymond, and TBS stacks The Big Bang Theory, with Season 3 starting at 9:30pm. Comedy Central has Family Guy all night, with S09E01 landing at 10pm. These are strands, and any one is as good as the next, so choose by taste. The Golden Girls is the sharpest of them if you’ve never watched any.
Hallmark already has Christmas movies on: A Danish Christmas (2026) at 8pm on Hallmark Channel, with The Christmas Secret (2014) at 10pm, and on Hallmark Mystery, Christmas Scavenger Hunt (2019) and November Christmas (2010). Lifetime has While She Was Sleeping (2026) at 8pm.
The one to skip is the late heavyweight. AMC’s Jurassic World: Dominion (2022) starts at 10:15pm ET and is scheduled for 195 minutes, which carries it to 1:30am. A film that long this late in a Sunday is a decision to lose sleep on Monday, and two stars is generous. Freeform’s Aladdin (1992) at 8pm and The Little Mermaid (1989) at 10:05pm make a far easier pair.
The short answer
Watch Sunday Night Football on NBC at 8:15pm ET. If football isn’t for you, Mrs. Doubtfire on ABC at 8:02pm ET is the easy choice, and Married at First Sight on Bravo at 9:30pm ET is the one thing worth setting aside the evening for.
