TBS gives its primetime to wrestling and hands the rest to sitcoms

The only appointment on TBS tonight is All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite, which takes the 8pm ET (5pm PT) slot for two full hours. Everything else on the channel is a sitcom marathon that could be joined at any point, so Dynamite is the one thing worth planning around.

It has a lot of competition. At 8pm ET the field includes Survivor on CBS, Scrubs on ABC and Guy’s Grocery Games on Food Network, and a wrestling show has to be a deliberate choice against those. The show has aired 204 episodes across four series and began life on TNT, so this is a long-running weekly habit rather than a one-off. If you already watch it, nothing here will change your mind. If you don’t, two hours is a real investment on a night this busy.

After Dynamite the channel switches to Impractical Jokers at 10pm ET, and it keeps going until the end of the evening. The 11pm ET episode, “The Endless Esophagus”, is flagged as the opener of Season 12, which makes it the natural place to start if you want to sample the series. The show has run 287 episodes to date across 12 series, so there is plenty of back catalog behind that late slot. Note that the 10pm and 10:30pm episodes sit directly against NHL Postgame on TNT and The Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo, so TBS is the lighter option for the half hour after wrestling ends.

The build-up is pure comfort programming. The Big Bang Theory runs from 4pm ET and lands on “The Bad Fish Paradigm” at 7:30pm ET, the first episode of its second season, in the half hour before Dynamite. It works as a lead-in simply because it is a sitcom people leave on. Earlier in the day the channel runs Friends in the late morning and afternoon, with Young Sheldon before it. The Office fills the overnight hours, and all three of The Office, Friends and The Big Bang Theory air every day, so none of them is news.

The verdict: wrestling fans get a clear two hours, and everyone else gets a very familiar night with a decent late-night comedy hour at the end.
