If you wanted variety from TBS on Thursday, the channel isn’t offering it. The Big Bang Theory runs from 4pm ET to 11pm ET without a break, fourteen half-hours of season two, and the primetime stretch from 8pm to 11pm ET is nothing else. That’s the whole argument: a sitcom that finished its run in 2019, 279 episodes to date across 12 series, used as the evening’s wallpaper.

It’s reliable wallpaper, though, and the choice of episodes is tidy. The 8pm ET hour starts with The Vartabedian Conundrum (S02E10) and works through to The Maternal Capacitance at 10:30pm ET, in order, so if you’ve been following the run since the afternoon you won’t have missed a link. Three stars for the strand, because it’s competent and it’s everywhere.

The Office has the better slot

The best placed thing on the channel is the late block. The Office returns at 11pm ET with Halloween (S02E05), which is the right episode for 29 October, and follows it at 11:30pm ET with Employee Transfer. That’s four stars from me for the Halloween one, mostly for the calendar fit. The same show also fills the hours from 2am to 7am ET, so it’s a fixture.

Comedy Central also has The Office on in primetime, at 8pm, 9:30pm, 10pm and 10:30pm ET, each time opposite TBS’s Big Bang Theory. Whichever you pick, you’re choosing between two long-running sitcoms.

Friends and Young Sheldon

Friends has the late morning, 10am to 4pm ET, working from season five into season six, with The One After Vegas (S06E01) at 11:30am ET as the season opener. Young Sheldon covers breakfast, 7am to 10am ET, and is on twice today, which is the repeat evidence the schedule gives us. Nobody is turning on at those hours for anything other than company.

Who this is for

An evening on TBS is for someone who knows exactly what they want and wants no surprises. If you’re after something fresh across the dial at 8pm ET, ABC has 9-1-1, Bravo has The Real Housewives of Orange County and Food Network has Beat Bobby Flay.
