TBS spends twenty hours of Friday on sitcoms, then does the one thing it should: it puts Jaws on at 8pm ET and gets out of the way. Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film is the best thing on the channel all day by a distance, and it is competing with a half-day of reruns that nobody will remember by Monday.

Five stars, and a firm pick. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss lead a film that runs 165 minutes, so it finishes at 10:45pm ET and the channel goes straight into the sequel. The opposition is not weak, though. Fox has the 2026 World Series at the same hour, Comedy Central has The Office and Discovery has Gold Rush, so TBS is asking viewers to choose a film they have probably seen over a live baseball game.

Jaws 2 at 10:45pm ET is the weaker half of the double bill. It’s a 1978 film directed by Jeannot Szwarc, with Scheider and Lorraine Gary returning. Two stars: stay if the first film left you wanting more, but nobody should pretend it’s the main event.

The rest of the day is all comedy, and it’s relentless. A dozen episodes of Friends fill the stretch from 10am to 4pm ET, and The Big Bang Theory takes over from 4pm until the film starts, eight half-hours with no break, ending with an episode from season 12. Young Sheldon fills the morning, and The Office runs through the overnight hours, a dozen episodes in a row from midnight. If there’s a gap in your Friday, TBS has an episode ready to fill it.

That structure is the point. This is a channel that sells comfort by the hour and then, once a night, changes gear. Tonight the gear change is a very good one.
