How to watch the NHL on TV in the US

Hockey on American TV works differently from the NFL. Only a few games a week are national, shown across the whole country. The rest, which is most of the schedule, are on local TV: each team has a channel in its own area that carries its games, and someone two states away won’t get it.

The national games are split between two partners. ESPN has 100 games this season across ESPN, ABC and streaming on ESPN+, Hulu and Disney+, and some of those are streaming only, with no TV channel at all. TNT Sports has 72 regular-season games, with Wednesday its main night, and its games are also on truTV and stream on HBO Max. NHL Network shows a few more. ABC’s first game of the season is on Saturday, January 16.

Local channels are mostly regional sports networks, such as NESN for the Boston Bruins, MSG for the New York Rangers, Altitude for the Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Sports Network for the Blackhawks, SportsNet Pittsburgh for the Penguins and NBC Sports California for the San Jose Sharks. Some teams have moved their games to free local stations or to their own streaming services, which is why the local TV column names a mix of networks, stations and apps.

The national column is the one to check first: a game there is on everywhere in the US. “Streaming only” means the game is on ESPN+, Hulu and Disney+ but on no TV channel. When the national column says “None”, the game is on the two teams’ local channels and nowhere else nationally.

Times are Eastern. In the Central time zone, take an hour off; on the West Coast, take three. The page is rebuilt every afternoon, so the tables for tomorrow are the ones to use if you’re reading in the morning.
