History runs a single show for eight hours tonight

History has bet its whole evening on one title. Mysteries Unearthed with Danny Trejo airs at 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, 8pm, 9:02pm, 10:05pm and 11:05pm ET, eight straight hours of the same series. If it works for you, this is the night. If it doesn’t, there is nothing else to switch to.

The primetime slots are 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central), 9:02pm ET and 10:05pm ET. They run 62, 63 and 60 minutes, which is the channel’s habit of stretching hours by a few minutes. Against that, a viewer has 9-1-1 and its Nashville spin-off on ABC, The Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo and Ghosts on CBS. This is a niche pick and the competition is far bigger, so the audience for it is chosen, not accidental.

There is a similar pattern in the daytime. History’s Deadliest with Ving Rhames fills every hour from 8am to 4pm, which is eight more airings in a row. Put the two blocks together and almost sixteen of the day’s 24 hours go to two titles. It is cheap, simple scheduling, and it makes the channel easy to leave on, but it asks very little of anyone programming it.

The more interesting slot is earlier. Modern Marvels: Adventure Machines at 7am is the first episode of season 19, a series that has run 690 episodes to date. That is the one true series opener on the day, and it is easy to miss at that hour. If you want something on History that is not a marathon, set a recording for it.

Overnight is Pawn Stars three times (12:03am, 2:04am, 3:05am), then Mountain Men at 1:02am, before Paid Program fills the hours until 6am. Pawn Stars has turned up on four days in our window, so it is a regular fixture, not a find.

My pick is the 8pm Mysteries Unearthed, for the reason that it is the first slot a prime-time viewer is likely to reach. Anyone willing to get up early should record Modern Marvels instead. The rest of the day is rotation, and we are not pretending otherwise.
