History’s night belongs to Mountain Men, and Pawn Stars fills everything around it

Pawn Stars fills most of History’s Wednesday, so the single reason to look up at primetime is Mountain Men at 9pm ET/PT (8pm Central). It’s the only hour on the channel’s schedule that isn’t a pawn-shop episode, and at 63 minutes it’s the longest primetime slot. The episode is “Wild North: To The Bone”, from the series’ fifteenth season.

That is the pick, and the case is simple. Mountain Men is a reality series about living off the land, and it gives the evening a different texture from the shop counter. It also has a quiet field around it: at 9, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is on ABC and Hocus Pocus on Freeform, neither a natural match for the same viewer. If you want something outdoors and unscripted, this is the hour.

Around it, History is on autopilot. Pawn Stars airs at 8pm ET with “Cruisin’ for a Deal”, again at 10:03pm and again at 11:05pm, bookending the one change of pace. The title turns up twice today in the strict sense, and the schedule has it across the afternoon and early evening as well. A viewer who tunes in at random between noon and 8 will land on an episode of the same show roughly every time.

The one genuinely new thing is Pawn Stars Do America, a spin-off whose first episode, “Denver Gold Rush”, airs at 10am ET. It’s a two-hour opener, and the schedule repeats the series twice today, with episode five, “National Treasures”, at 8am. For a daytime viewer curious about the format, 10am is the start point. It’s a long ask for a morning, though, and there’s no way to judge how it will play from the listing alone.

The overnight is documentary filler. The UnXplained Special Presentation runs from just after midnight, four hours of it, followed by paid programming until 6am. Skip it unless you can’t sleep.

Verdict: skip the pawn shop and watch Mountain Men at 9pm. The rest is background noise.
