FX has one original hour tonight, and everything around it is a movie block

The Lowdown at 9pm ET is the only thing on FX tonight that the channel made for itself. Everything else is acquired: a Ghostbusters run, two Adam Sandler comedies, a pair of M. Night Shyamalan films and a sitcom. If you came to FX for FX, you have exactly 60 minutes.

Make them count. The Lowdown is a 2025 American black comedy that began on FX, with Ethan Hawke leading a cast that includes Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kaniehtiio Horn, Tim Blake Nelson and Jeanne Tripplehorn. That is a strong ensemble for a basic-cable half-prestige slot, and it is the reason this page has a pick. It airs on a night where the competition at 9pm ET is Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on ABC, Watch What Happens Live on Bravo and Hocus Pocus on Freeform. None of those asks anything of you, which makes a series with a cast like this an easy choice.

The 10pm ET film is a consolation

Ghostbusters II follows at 10pm ET and runs 150 minutes. It is the 1989 sequel from Ivan Reitman, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis back. A solid late-night comedy and the obvious one to leave on. It is also the film in the Ghostbusters run you least need to catch tonight: the 1984 original is on at 2:30pm ET, and Ghostbusters II turns up on three days in our window (Oct. 18, 23 and 28), so it will be back. AMC has The Final Destination against it at 10pm ET, and Ghost Adventures is on Discovery.

The channel’s Ghostbusters commitment is bigger than one film. The 2016 Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, from Paul Feig, opens the schedule at 12:30am ET and runs 180 minutes. It has appeared on six days of the window, more than anything else FX lists. A film shown that often is a filler, not an event.

The morning is better than the evening

If you work from home, or just have a free morning, the schedule’s best film is at 9:30am ET. The Sixth Sense, the 1999 Shyamalan film with Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette, Olivia Williams and Donnie Wahlberg, runs 150 minutes. Shyamalan’s The Happening, from 2008 with Mark Wahlberg, comes at 7:30am ET, two hours before it. Same director, wildly different reputations. Watch them in whichever order your mood suggests.

Afternoon and early evening

Bloodshot, the 2020 Vin Diesel superhero film directed by Dave Wilson, fills noon. It is the schedule’s least necessary 150 minutes. Grown Ups at 5pm ET and Grown Ups 2 at 7pm ET, both directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade and company, lead into primetime. Three days of the window have both. That is a lot of Sandler for people who didn’t ask.

According to Jim airs twice, at 3:30am ET and 7am ET (S04E27 and S05E01), and it is the only series on the page besides The Lowdown. The rest of the overnight is paid programming.
