AMC turns Thursday into a horror marathon, with wrestling in the middle

AMC has handed almost the whole day to horror, and the one programme that isn’t a scary movie, TNA iMPACT! Wrestling at 9pm ET, lands right in the middle of primetime. Eight films air between midnight and 11pm, so if you want a movie night two days before Halloween, this is the channel to leave on. The best single block is the early evening: It at 6pm ET, three hours long, finishing just as primetime starts.

Why It is the pick

At 180 minutes, the 2017 It is the longest thing on AMC’s schedule, and the slot suits it. Starting at 6pm ET means you can sit down after work and be done by 9pm, before the wrestling takes over. It is also the only film in the lineup that’s a full evening in itself. The rest of the movies run 120 minutes, give or take. If you only have one slot to spare, take this one.

The Exorcist in the morning

The Exorcist airs at 9:15am ET, which is an odd hour for a 1973 horror film directed by William Friedkin. It runs 165 minutes, so it takes up the whole late morning. I’d rather see it after dark, but AMC clearly isn’t asking. Recording it is the practical answer. It is the strongest title on the day by reputation, and the slot is the only complaint.

The slasher stretch in the afternoon

From noon, AMC runs three remakes and reboots back to back: the 2019 Child’s Play at 12pm ET, the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street at 2pm ET and the 2009 Friday the 13th at 4pm ET. Each is 120 minutes. They are not equals. The Nightmare remake is the weakest of the three on my scorecard, and it has been on this channel on five different days in the current window. Friday the 13th has done six. If you’ve caught either this month, skip them. Child’s Play has turned up on only two days, so it is the freshest of the afternoon.

Wrestling at 9pm

TNA iMPACT! Wrestling (Season 26, Episode 44) runs two hours from 9pm ET. It’s the only primetime programme here that isn’t a movie, and it’s the sort of break a horror-heavy night needs. It faces the usual crowd: 9-1-1: Nashville on ABC, Ghosts on CBS and American Horror Story on FX. Viewers who like wrestling will already have made up their minds. Everyone else is better off waiting for the 11pm film.

Late: Thir13en Ghosts

Thir13en Ghosts (2001) closes the night at 11pm ET, a two-hour film directed by Steve Beck, with Tony Shalhoub, F. Murray Abraham and Matthew Lillard in the cast. It is a sensible way to end the marathon.

What to skip

Overnight, the 2002 Ghost Ship (midnight ET) and the 1982 Poltergeist (2am ET) are both on, as is The Terror: Devil in Silver at 4:30am ET. The Terror has aired on six days in this window. Paid Program fills the six half-hours from 6am ET. Nothing there needs your attention.
