USA Network’s Sunday is Law & Order: SVU, and the 9pm episode is out of order

USA Network has built its Sunday around one show, and the interesting detail is where it goes off the rails. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit runs from 6:30am until after 11pm ET. At 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central) it plays Loss, season 5, episode 4. At 9pm it jumps back to season 4 for Privilege (S04E17), then returns to season 5 at 10pm for Serendipity (S05E05). Nobody is going to mistake that for an accident, but it means the 9pm hour is the odd one out, a stray from the previous season dropped into a run of consecutive episodes.

Loss is the pick, and the reason is the lineup around it. It sits inside a clean sequence: Tragedy (S05E01) at 5pm opens the run, Manic and Mother follow, and Loss lands as the fourth in a row. Anyone who tunes in at 5pm gets four consecutive episodes before the sequence is interrupted. Four stars for the structure, and for a show with 594 episodes to date across 28 seasons, which began on NBC and stars Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T. Privilege at 9pm gets three, simply because it breaks the rhythm.

The competition is no help. At 8pm USA is up against Mrs. Doubtfire on ABC, The Simpsons on Fox, Naked and Afraid on Discovery and Aladdin on Freeform. At 9pm it faces Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Bravo and The Gilded Age on HBO. That is a long list of alternatives, and SVU is still the only one of them you can start at 5pm and stay with.

The one break from the pattern in daytime is German Bundesliga Soccer at 11:30am ET (8:30am PT), a live event that runs two hours. USA isn’t saying which match. It aired on October 24 too. The Rainmaker follows at 10:30am, a show that has been on USA across ten days of the window, so it is plainly a filler strand.

Overnight, Chicago Fire runs from 3am, with Hot and Fast (S10E16) at 4am, and Forensic Files fills the 6am slot. Both are on twice today. Two stars for the overnight block, which is there for completeness more than anything.
