SmackDown at 8pm ET is the only reason to point a live-TV habit at USA Network tonight. The show has run for 28 series and 1,397 episodes, and it gets two full hours in the one slot where the network has a clear lane. Most of the competition is aimed elsewhere: Fox has the World Series, ABC has Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and CBS has Sheriff Country. A wrestling fan has no great decision to make.

The second-best thing on the day is the earliest sports block. “Breeders’ Cup 2026” runs five hours from 1pm ET, which is a long commitment, but it is the sort of programming that justifies a channel keeping afternoons clear. It’s a three-star watch for racing fans and nobody else.

Then comes the part of the day that is simply filler by volume. “Chicago Fire” fills ten consecutive hours from 3am to noon ET, season 8, episodes 7 through 16, which is the entire morning given over to one show. Overnight before that, six half-hours of “How I Met Your Mother” run from season 1, episode 16 (“Cupcake”) through episode 21 (“Milk”). Fine if you’re up, and no one else is.

“The Rainmaker” is the thing the network is using to hold the evening together. It appears at 6pm, 7pm, 10pm and again as a four-minute slot at 11pm ET, and it has aired on eleven different days in our window. At 10pm ET it faces The First 48, Boston Blue and the two Hallmark Christmas movies. I’d call it a rerun-heavy fallback, not an appointment.

“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (“Deception”, season 4, episode 2) arrives at 11:04pm ET as the closer. The show airs daily here, so it is a fixture rather than a find.

Pick the 8pm ET wrestling. The other 22 hours of the schedule are there if you want a lot of television, and a good deal less if you want one specific show.
