USA Network’s Wednesday is a marathon schedule, and the evening is the biggest block: 9-1-1 runs every hour from 4pm ET to midnight, eight straight hours, with primetime at 8, 9 and 10pm ET/PT (7, 8 and 9pm Central). If you like the show, this is your night. If you don’t, there is nothing else on the channel to switch to.

That’s the claim, and it holds up. 9-1-1 is an American procedural drama that has run to nine series and 142 episodes. A schedule built on that much material can run for hours without a repeat showing up in the same hour, which suits a binge. The listings don’t say which episodes are on, and they don’t need to: any hour from 8pm is a reasonable entry point.

The competition makes the case stronger. At 8pm, Survivor is on CBS and Scrubs on ABC, with The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City on Bravo. At 10pm, Shark Tank has ABC. A viewer who wants a scripted drama has far fewer options in that window, and USA’s block is built to catch them.

The morning is the other fixture. Chicago P.D. starts at 6am ET with “Doubt”, the season seven opener, and runs ten episodes straight to 4pm. It’s a police procedural that has reached 14 series, so this is a catch-up for anyone who dropped out around season seven. The earliest hours are the best of it, and the afternoon is a long haul if you try to take it all in.

Overnight, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit gets three episodes from midnight, all from the third season, followed by Dateline until 6am. SVU appears every day in this window, so it’s a fixture rather than an event. Treat it as background for insomniacs.

The twist is that nothing here is a surprise, and USA is fine with that. It’s a channel for people who want a show on and don’t want to think about it.

Verdict: 8pm ET for 9-1-1, and don’t bother hunting for an alternative on this network.
