USA Network clears its night for the WNBA Finals

USA Network has handed its prime time to the WNBA Finals, and that is the only reason to be on this channel tonight. The game is at 8pm ET (5pm PT), a two-and-a-half-hour slot, and it airs live nationwide, so West Coast viewers get it in the late afternoon.

The channel builds it properly. WNBA on USA – Pregame starts at 7pm ET (4pm PT), and WNBA on USA – Postgame follows at 10:30pm ET (7:30pm PT) for 30 minutes. That is three and a half hours of basketball in one evening. The Finals have aired on four days in our window, as have the pregame and postgame shows, so this is a series with a real rhythm and not a one-off.

The competition outside the game is mostly scripted. 9-1-1 is on ABC at 8pm, The Real Housewives of Orange County is on Bravo, and CBS has Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Nobody else is offering live sport at 8pm, which is a clear edge for USA. At 10:30pm the field thins out further, with The Office on Comedy Central and The Big Bang Theory on TBS.

Before the game, the afternoon belongs to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which runs every hour from 6am to 6pm. The 6pm episode, Chameleon, is the first of season four, so anyone who has been following the run since the morning gets a clean break point. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has aired for 28 series and 594 episodes to date, which is why USA can afford to run it all day, every day. It is a fixture, not a discovery.

The overnight block is 9-1-1 from midnight to 3am, then Dateline for three hours, and The Rainmaker at 11pm closes the day. Both 9-1-1 and Dateline appear twice today, and The Rainmaker has been a near-daily fixture, on eleven days in our window.

My pick is plain: the Finals. The Special Victims Unit marathon is a comfortable way to fill the afternoon, but the game is why the channel matters tonight.
