Syfy has put The Golden Compass on twice in one day, at 1pm ET and again at 9:30pm ET, and neither showing is the best thing on the channel. That honor goes to The Princess Bride at 5pm ET, which is the one movie here I would rearrange a Monday for. Rob Reiner’s 1987 film has Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, André the Giant and Chris Sarandon, and it fills 120 minutes without a dull one. Five stars, though it is not the pick, because the pick has to be something you can catch in the evening.

The primetime film is the 2007 Golden Compass, directed by Chris Weitz, with Nicole Kidman, Sam Elliott, Eva Green, Dakota Blue Richards and Daniel Craig. It is based on Northern Lights. It runs 150 minutes from 9:30pm ET, which is a longer slot than the 120 minutes it got at 1pm, so the evening showing carries more commercials. Three stars: a good-looking fantasy that is better as an afternoon watch. Against it, AMC has Back to the Future Part II at the same minute, and the choice there is easy for most people.

Right before it, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader runs from 7pm ET for 150 minutes. Michael Apted directed it, and Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, Will Poulter, Ben Barnes and Liam Neeson are in the cast. Three stars. Syfy has simply stacked fantasy into the evening: Narnia, then Compass.

The surprise sits at 3pm ET. Safety Not Guaranteed, from 2012, has Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass and Jake Johnson, and it is a small comedy that does not look like the rest of the day. Four stars, and the best argument that Syfy can do more than one thing.

Overnight, The Twilight Zone fills 2am to 4am and most of the morning, with episodes such as Mr. Bevis, Dust and Living Doll. Trolls Band Together, Migration and Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken all air for the second day running, so the family end of the schedule is familiar.
