Syfy’s Sunday peaks at 7:30pm ET with The Princess Bride (1987), directed by Rob Reiner, with Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin and André the Giant. It’s a romantic comedy and a fantasy, it runs two hours, and it’s the best thing on the channel all day. Five stars.

What follows at 9:30pm is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010, directed by Michael Apted, with Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes and Ben Barnes). It’s a long one at 150 minutes, and it’s a drop in quality after the Reiner film, so three stars. Together they make a sensible fantasy double bill. Opposition at 9:30pm is mostly comedy and reality: Married at First Sight on Bravo, The Big Bang Theory on TBS, Tracker on CBS, and The Internship on TNT. Fantasy has the evening to itself.

The daytime schedule is a different matter. Five animated slots in a row, and one film takes two of them. The Croods: A New Age (2020) airs at 9:30am and again at 1:30pm, with Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (2023) between them, then Trolls Band Together (2023) at 3:30pm and Migration (2023) at 5:30pm. Doubling up on The Croods is a filler move, and I’d give it two stars. The animation block is a kids’ afternoon and little else.

The better material runs at night. The Twilight Zone is a fixture on Syfy, and the overnight and early-morning blocks carry eight episodes before 9:30am: The Arrival at 2:30am, And When the Sky Was Opened at 3am, The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street at 3:30am, then The Whole Truth, The Night of the Meek, The Parallel, Person or Persons Unknown and No Time Like the Past between 6am and 9:30am. Maple Street is the one to record. Four stars.

Halloween II (2009, Rob Zombie) opens the day at 1am. The film has aired four times in the window, which is a lot for a 150-minute horror film. Fine for the insomniac, but nobody needs it.

So: Twilight Zone before breakfast, animation in the middle, two fantasy films after dinner. Stay for The Princess Bride and call it a night.
