Syfy’s primetime is a single long comedy, and the Nicolas Cage afternoon is better

Syfy has one primetime programme tonight: Ghostbusters: Answer the Call at 9pm ET, 180 minutes of Paul Feig’s 2016 comedy horror with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth. That is the pick, with caveats. It is a three-hour slot for a film that doesn’t need one, and FX shows the same title at 12:30am ET, so nobody is short of chances.

At 9pm ET it is up against Hocus Pocus on Freeform, The Lowdown on FX and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on ABC. The sensible choice for most households is Freeform’s Halloween film, or FX’s series. Choose Syfy if you want a long, low-effort comedy.

The afternoon belongs to Nicolas Cage

The schedule’s best stretch is earlier. Renfield, the 2023 vampire comedy from Chris McKay, starts at 11:30am ET with Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, and runs 120 minutes. Gone in 60 Seconds at 1:30pm ET follows, and Con Air at 4pm ET, 150 minutes each. Cage is in all three. Con Air also has John Cusack, John Malkovich and Steve Buscemi. A straight-through run from 11:30am to 6:30pm ET is seven hours and the best case for a day in front of Syfy.

For night owls

Fright Night, the 2011 Craig Gillespie vampire film with Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell and David Tennant, airs at 1am ET, and it is the best late film on the channel. After it, The Twilight Zone runs half-hour episodes from 3:30am ET and returns at 6am ET.
