Hallmark Mystery spends Friday on Christmas, not mysteries

Nothing on Hallmark Mystery tonight is a whodunit. The channel has gone fully festive, and the one title worth planning around is “Journey Back to Christmas” (2016) at 8pm ET, starring Candace Cameron Bure and Oliver Hudson under director Mel Damski. It is the only primetime movie of the day with a fantasy and science fiction tag attached, which makes it the oddity in a row of romances, and the oddity is the reason to pick it.

It also has the evening to itself, more or less. Fox has the World Series and ABC has Celebrity Wheel of Fortune at the same time, so anyone who wants a holiday movie has two Hallmark channels to choose from. Hallmark Channel’s own 8pm movie is a 2026 title, so this is the older, quieter alternative.

The earlier slot with a story is the pairing at 2pm and 4pm ET. “A Godwink Christmas: Meant for Love” (2019) stars Cindy Busby and Ben Hollingsworth, with Kathie Lee Gifford in the cast. “A Godwink Christmas: Second Chance, First Love” (2020) follows it, and both belong to the same branded series of Christmas stories. Back to back they make a better afternoon than most of what’s on elsewhere.

“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” at 6pm ET is the odd one out for a different reason. It dates from 1998 and has Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Jessica Biel in it, which makes it the oldest title on the day by some distance. It is a nice change of pace before primetime.

Late at night, “We Need A Little Christmas” (2022) closes the evening at 10pm ET. Hallmark Channel puts “Forgotten Holiday” against it, so the two sister channels split the Christmas audience at that hour. It’s fine, but it is a filler slot and I’d rate it as such.

Candace Cameron Bure fans also get “A Shoe Addict’s Christmas” (2018) at 10am ET, so the 8pm movie is not the only chance to see her today.
