Hallmark Mystery has gone Christmas too, and there’s barely a mystery in sight

Despite the name, Hallmark Mystery’s Wednesday is twelve straight Christmas movies. The one to build the evening around is One December Night at 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central), a 2021 movie tagged as family and music, which makes it the least formulaic-sounding title in a day of near-identical names.

It’s also the only primetime movie here that isn’t a comedy-drama in the usual mold. That matters on a night when the competition at 8 is Survivor, Scrubs, Alaska State Troopers and Guy’s Grocery Games. A music-led holiday movie is a distinct offer against that field, and the reason to pick it over the next hour of the same channel.

The caveat is repeat exposure. One December Night airs on two days in the window, October 18 and tonight. If you saw it last Sunday, there’s no case for sitting through it again. The same applies to Christmas Wonderland at 6pm ET, A Very Vermont Christmas at noon, Friends & Family Christmas at 6am and Angel Falls: A Novel Holiday at 4pm: each turns up twice in the window. Of those, Christmas Wonderland (2018, a Christmas romance) is the most watchable lead-in to the 8pm slot.

At 10pm ET/PT comes Where Are You, Christmas?, a 2023 movie tagged comedy, drama and fantasy. Hallmark Channel puts Our Holiday Story up against it at the same minute, so the family is competing with itself. If the fantasy tag appeals, this is the better late choice. It also has the slot to itself on this channel, which is rare on a day this packed.

The overnight block is where the older material lives. Naughty or Nice (2012) leads off at midnight, with Christmas at Cartwright’s (2014) and The National Tree (2009) behind it. They’re the deep catalog, and a good reminder of how long Hallmark has been doing this. They’re also not for tonight unless you’re awake at 4am.

Verdict: the 8pm music movie, then a coin flip at 10. Skip anything you’ve already seen on the 18th.
