Hallmark Mystery shows twelve movies today and none of them is a whodunit by title. Every one of the twelve is a Christmas picture, which makes this a Christmas channel for the day, whatever its name says.

The anchor is The Christmas Contest at 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central), a 2021 movie that last aired on the 18th. Two hours long, it is the night’s longest primetime programme and the natural place to settle if you are watching live. It runs against 9-1-1 on ABC and The Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo, but neither is competing for the same viewer.

The better scheduling choice comes at 6pm. Switched for Christmas, from 2017, is the one title tonight with a clear lineage: it first aired on Hallmark Channel and the same is true of The Mistletoe Inn (2017), The Christmas Heart (2012) and The Christmas Ornament (2013) earlier in the day. So this is a channel borrowing from its neighbor’s back catalog rather than showing its own premieres. That is not a criticism, just a description of how the day is built.

At 10pm ‘Tis the Season to Be Irish, a 2024 movie and the newest on the schedule, closes primetime. It is the newest title today, which says something about how much of the evening leans on older material. Christmas Class Reunion at noon and Undercover Holiday at 2pm, both from 2022, are the next most recent.

Repeat pressure is light. Four titles appear twice in our window: Christmas Festival of Ice, Christmas Class Reunion, The Christmas Contest and The Mistletoe Inn. The other eight appear once in our window, so a viewer who tunes in often should still see plenty they have not caught this month.

I would take The Christmas Contest as the pick simply because it holds the best slot and the longest run time. Switched for Christmas at 6pm is a reasonable earlier option. The overnight block, which starts with Christmas Festival of Ice at midnight, is background viewing.
