Freeform’s Sunday is an animation marathon, and Aladdin is the high point

Freeform has cleared the schedule for animated films from 7:30 in the morning until midnight ET, and the one to plan around is Aladdin at 8pm. It’s a 1992 film at 125 minutes, and it hands over directly to The Little Mermaid (1989) at 10:05pm. That makes a natural two-film evening, and a better one than most of the live-action fare around it.

Take the competition seriously. At 8pm Aladdin is up against Mrs. Doubtfire on ABC, The Real Housewives of Potomac on Bravo, The Simpsons on Fox and A Danish Christmas on Hallmark Channel. For a household with kids it wins easily. For adults on their own it’s a harder call, but Aladdin earns four stars as the evening’s most reliable family pick. The Little Mermaid gets the same. Its 10:05pm slot is later than most children’s films get, and the opposition at that time (National Treasure: Book of Secrets on FX, Jurassic World: Dominion on AMC) is aimed at an older audience anyway.

The day is a long run of older titles. Fantasia (1940) opens it at 7:30am, 185 minutes, followed by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1938) at 10:35am, Bambi (1942) at 12:35pm, Cinderella (1950) at 2:10pm and Alice in Wonderland (1951) at 4:05pm. That is five films from before 1952 in a row, which is a remarkable amount of vintage animation to put out on a Sunday, and the stretch is easier to dip into than to sit through. Bambi gets three stars as the best place to join. Mulan (1998) at 6pm is the bridge into the evening and also gets three.

The oddity comes at the very start of the day. Frankenweenie (2012) airs at 12am, an hour long, and after it the schedule turns to paid programming until Boy Meets World at 7am, just before Fantasia. The hours in between are for sleep.

If you only watch one thing, make it Aladdin, then stay on for The Little Mermaid.
