Freeform’s Halloween is a Hocus Pocus double bill, and the first half is the better one

Freeform has built the evening on a simple pairing: Hocus Pocus at 7:20pm ET/PT (6:20pm Central), then Hocus Pocus 2 at 9:30pm, with the first film ending at exactly the minute the second begins. That tidy join is the whole appeal. Start at 7:20, leave the channel alone, and you have a four-hour night without touching the remote.

The 1993 original, directed by Kenny Ortega, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz and Thora Birch, is the pick. It also airs at 1pm, so it is on twice today, and the evening showing is the one to take if the afternoon has already gone to trick-or-treat prep. The 2022 sequel, directed by Anne Fletcher, brings back Midler, Parker and Najimy and adds Whitney Peak. It runs 150 minutes, twenty longer than the original, which is a lot to ask on a night that has no obvious end. Three stars: it’s good company, but it’s the second course.

The 3:10pm slot is the better alternative for younger viewers. The Nightmare Before Christmas, a 100-minute animated film, is the shortest movie on the channel today and sits in the afternoon, ahead of the second Casper showing at 4:50pm. Casper airs twice, at 8:30am and 4:50pm, so the second pass is for anyone who missed the morning.

The Haunted Mansion at 11am, the 2003 film directed by Rob Minkoff with Eddie Murphy and Marsha Thomason, is the least essential of the lot. It’s a filler between the morning Casper and the afternoon Hocus Pocus, and two stars is fair.

Elsewhere at 9:30pm the competition is thin: Disney Channel has Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Comedy Central has Pitch Perfect, and IFC has Freddy vs. Jason for the grown-ups who want teeth. For a family room, nothing else on the dial competes.
