Freeform has reduced Friday to a pair of movies played on a loop, and the better of the two is the one that airs at 5:30pm ET, not the one in primetime. Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) is on at noon and again at 5:30pm, three hours each time. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) is on at 2:55pm and 8:25pm, a little shorter at 155 minutes. That is four movie slots from a franchise, and the day’s logic is to put the older film first and the newer one in the evening.

I would put more weight on the earlier slot. Afterlife is the stronger film, with Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in the cast, and at 5:30pm it is a fair family-dinner-hour option. Four stars. Frozen Empire gets the prime slot, 8:25pm ET/PT (7:25pm Central), and three stars; Grace, Coon, Rudd and Ernie Hudson are in it, and it is the one to see if you want the follow-up. The 5:30pm showing of the first film ends at 8:25pm, so the evening is a back-to-back double feature if you start early.

The competition in the 8:25pm hour is thin on the holiday side. Bravo has Blade II, IFC has Christine and NBC has Newlyweds, so a Ghostbusters evening is the lighter option for a household that wants spooky but not frightening.

The rest of the day is a fixture schedule. Boy Meets World fills the overnight and the morning, the 700 Club runs at 3am, 9am and 11pm, and paid programming covers the dead hours. Nothing there needs a note.

Freeform’s films also suit a family that has to pick one channel for the night. For more scares on the same evening, see the movies on TV this week page.
