Sundance TV turns Friday into a creature-feature marathon

Sundance TV spends the night before Halloween on monsters, and the best of them waits until 10pm ET. Tremors is a comedy horror from 1990, directed by Ron Underwood, and it is the one to keep the TV on for. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward lead, with Reba McEntire and Michael Gross in support. It is the rare creature feature that is as funny as it is tense, and a 10pm slot gives it the late-night room it deserves.

Lake Placid at 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central) is the evening’s lead-in and the longest primetime slot, two hours of a 1999 monster movie directed by Steve Miner. Its genre tags run to buddy movie, comedy horror and monster movie, which tells you the tone: this is a film that wants to be laughed at as often as screamed at. Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Oliver Platt, Brendan Gleeson and Betty White make up the cast. Good company, though a step down from what follows.

The competition at 8pm is stiff. Fox has the 2026 World Series, and ABC, CBS and the cable regulars all start at the same moment. Anyone with no stake in baseball will find Sundance’s pairing the easiest horror double bill on the dial.

The daytime build-up is worth knowing if you start early. The Fly, the 1986 David Cronenberg picture, airs at 1:30pm ET. Arachnophobia follows at 3:30pm ET, a Frank Marshall comedy horror with Jeff Daniels and John Goodman. Anaconda, from 1997, takes the 6pm ET slot.

Outside the movies, the channel is its usual self. The Andy Griffith Show fills the morning and Law & Order fills the overnight hours, which is useful only if you want comfort viewing instead of fright.
