Sundance TV spends Wednesday on one idea: Law & Order, nine episodes back to back from 3pm to midnight ET, S14E04 through S14E12. If you want a police procedural on in the background tonight, this is the easiest channel to settle on.

Primetime is three more hours of it. Compassion (S14E09) starts at 8pm ET/PT, 7pm Central, followed by Ill-Conceived at 9pm and Darwinian at 10pm. Compassion is the pick, mostly because it opens the block and is the easiest place to join. The series is among the longest-running in American TV, with 26 seasons and 523 episodes, and it has aired on this channel on eight separate days in the past two weeks. That is a fixture, not an event, and it is worth knowing before you plan a night around it.

The competition is heavy at 8pm: Survivor on CBS and The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City on Bravo. Law & Order is the quieter choice. Each hour carries its own episode number, so you can drop in at 9pm or 10pm and lose nothing.

The more interesting scheduling is earlier. First Blood (1982) airs at 8:30am, with Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III both on twice, in the small hours and again by day. Of the three, the first is the one to catch. Directed by Ted Kotcheff, it is the best film of the run.

Late on, Payback (S14E12) closes the night at 11pm ET.
