Paramount Network goes all in on The Mummy for Halloween

Paramount Network has built its Halloween Saturday around one film. The Mummy airs at 2:35pm ET and again at 8:15pm ET, and The Mummy Returns follows twice, at 5:30pm and 11:20pm. If you’ve been waiting to see these two, you won’t struggle to find a slot.

The 8:15pm showing is the pick. The 1999 adventure, directed by Stephen Sommers, is scheduled for 185 minutes, so it carries the entire primetime and finishes near 11:20pm, just as the sequel begins. That is a deliberate hand-off. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz lead the cast, and the film is a better fit for a night in than a late scare. Four stars. Its only opposition at that hour is Backrooms on HBO, which makes this one of the quietest primetime fights on the dial.

The sequel, also directed by Stephen Sommers, gets three stars. It is the weaker movie to me, and it airs at 5:30pm ET and 11:20pm ET, so you can pick whichever slot suits you.

The surprise is Scream at noon ET, a 1996 film directed by Wes Craven that runs 155 minutes. It is a sharper choice than a marathon of sequels, and it is the one that most reads as a proper Halloween booking. Four stars, and it airs earlier than most people will be looking.

The early morning belongs to Everybody Loves Raymond, with back-to-back episodes from 6am ET, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back plays at 2:40am for the insomniacs.
