ION on Halloween: a full day of SVU, with a season restarting at 7pm

ION is not changing its habits for Halloween, and for the right viewer that is the appeal. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit fills nearly every hour of the day, and from 7pm ET/PT (6pm Central) the channel runs season 15 in order: S15E01 at 7pm, then four more episodes through to midnight. If you want a night of procedural drama and nothing seasonal, this is the cleanest answer on the dial.

The primetime run

The 8pm episode, Imprisoned Lives, is my pick: it opens the three primetime hours, and by then anyone who started at 7pm is settled in. Three stars. The rating is about the slot and the show’s standing, since nothing tells us what happens in any individual episode.

The 7pm opener, Surrender Benson, is the season’s first episode and is flagged as the series opener, which makes it the natural entry point if you want to sit down for the full run. After it come Imprisoned Lives at 8pm, American Tragedy at 9pm, Internal Affairs at 10pm and Wonderland Story at 11pm. Five hours, five episodes, in order.

What makes the run worth noting is how it plays against the rest of the evening. At 8pm, Fox has the World Series, CBS has FBI, FX has Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Food Network has its Halloween baking show. At 9pm it faces Halloween II on AMC and Scary Movie 2 on Bravo. At 10pm CBS has 48 Hours and Hallmark Channel has The Spirit of Halloween. ION is the one channel in that field staying with a single long-running drama hour after hour, and for anyone who wants that, it has the evening to itself.

The show itself is a long-runner: 594 episodes across 28 series, first on NBC, with Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T among its cast. It is on ION constantly: it has aired on eight days in the current window, so a viewer who misses tonight will see it again soon.

Daytime and overnight

From 6am, ION runs season 14 in order, one hour at a time, from Criminal Hatred at 6am to Her Negotiation at 6pm. That is thirteen hours of one show in sequence, and it hands off to season 15 at 7pm without a break. It is a weak lead-in for anyone looking for variety and a good one for anyone who wants an all-day background channel.

The overnight is a different show. S.W.A.T. runs three episodes from midnight: The Enemy Within, Exploited and Run to Ground, all season 8. Two stars each in my book, because they are late and the schedule gives no reason to stay up for them. After 3am, the channel fills the dead hours with Paid Program slots and a half hour of Through the Bible with Les Feldick at 4:30am, so there is nothing to see until 6am.

That is the whole day. ION has made a clear decision to be reliable rather than seasonal, and on a night when every other channel is doing something loud, there is a case for it.
