ION tonight: Blue Bloods from lunchtime to midnight, and a new season at 11pm

ION has given most of its Wednesday to one show. Blue Bloods runs back to back from 11am ET until midnight, thirteen hours of it, and the evening is the stretch where it pays off: season six wraps up across primetime and season seven begins at 11pm with “The Greater Good”. If you only watch one hour, make it that last one.

Primetime is three consecutive episodes, “Down the Rabbit Hole” at 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central), “The Extra Mile” at 9pm and “Blowback” at 10pm. They are episodes 20, 21 and 22 of season six, in order with no break for anything else. That is the appeal of ION’s approach: no scheduling to decipher, just the next episode. It’s also the limit of it. There’s no variety tonight, and the best recommendation we can give for any one of the three is that you’ll want the others.

Blue Bloods itself is an American police procedural, first broadcast on CBS, with 14 seasons and 293 episodes behind it. Its cast includes Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan and Vanessa Ray. Those numbers explain why ION leans on it so heavily, because there is enough of it to fill a day without repeating itself, though ION does repeat itself: the show appears on four separate dates in our window, and twice today, so tonight’s primetime isn’t a surprise to the regulars.

The competition at 8pm is Survivor on CBS, which is the obvious alternative, and a very different mood: a competition against a procedural. At 9pm, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on ABC and The Lowdown on FX, with Shark Tank on ABC at 10pm. None of these is a close substitute. Viewers who want a crime hour on a weeknight and don’t want to follow a serialized story are exactly who ION is aiming for.

The series opener is the real event. “The Greater Good” at 11pm is the first episode of season seven, and it follows the 10pm episode directly, which makes the late slot more interesting than the early ones. We give it four stars, a notch above the run that precedes it. Nothing else about the day on ION is a talking point, but as a reason to stay up past ten, a season opener is a good one.

For the rest of the day, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit takes the morning from 6am to 11am, and Chicago Fire plays three episodes from midnight. Overnight, from 3am, it’s paid programming and a Through the Bible with Les Feldick at 4:30am. That’s the whole schedule: one show, a few others, and a cheerful willingness to repeat itself.
