On a night when Fox has handed its whole evening to the World Series, CBS runs the only unbroken block of hour-long dramas among the four big networks: Sheriff Country at 8pm ET, Fire Country at 9pm and Boston Blue at 10pm. If you want to watch scripted television on Friday and not baseball, this is where you come. The middle hour is the one I’d keep.

The pick: Fire Country at 9pm

Fire Country has the most history of the three. It stands at five seasons and 72 episodes, with Max Thieriot, Billy Burke, Kevin Alejandro, Diane Farr and Jordan Calloway in the cast. That kind of run is why it works as the center of a three-hour block: the network doesn’t have to explain it, and regular viewers don’t need to be told it is on. CBS isn’t saying what tonight’s installment holds, so the case rests on the show’s track record and its slot.

The competition at 9pm ET is mostly lighter fare. 20/20 is on ABC, Dateline NBC on NBC, Halloween on AMC and Hocus Pocus 2 on FX, which is a seasonal pair. Fire Country is the hour-long scripted option among them. Four stars.

The opener: Sheriff Country at 8pm

Sheriff Country is the newest of the dramas on paper, two seasons and 20 episodes, and it opens the block. Morena Baccarin, Matt Lauria, Christopher Gorham and Michele Weaver are in the cast. The lead-in to Fire Country matters. A weak 8pm would take down everything that follows, and CBS has put a series with a recognizable cast there instead.

The slot is crowded. Celebrity Wheel of Fortune is on ABC, The Office on Comedy Central, Gold Rush on Discovery, and the World Series on Fox. It is a good first hour for anyone settling in for the whole block. Three stars.

The closer: Boston Blue at 10pm

Boston Blue is based on Blue Bloods, which gives it a ready-made audience, and Donnie Wahlberg, Sonequa Martin-Green, Maggie Lawson, Ernie Hudson and Gloria Reuben lead the cast. It has 20 episodes behind it. Its hour is the quietest of the three in terms of rivals: The First 48 on A&E, The Office on Comedy Central, Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO and the Hallmark holiday movies. If you’ve stayed with CBS for two hours, this is the one that rewards you for it. Three stars.

The rest of the schedule

After the block, Comics Unleashed is on at 11:35pm ET, rather than a talk show, and again at 12:05am. Funny You Should Ask runs at 12:35am and 1:05am. CBS News Roundup fills 2am for three hours, and CBS Mornings starts at 7am for two. The daytime run is the usual one: The Price Is Right at 11am, The Young and the Restless at 12:30pm, The Bold and the Beautiful at 1:30pm, Beyond the Gates at 2pm and Let’s Make a Deal at 3pm.

The short version

Watch Fire Country at 9pm ET. If you like it, stay on for Boston Blue at 10pm. If you’ve been watching all week, Sheriff Country at 8pm is the easy way into the evening.
