CBS fills Thursday with comedy and saves its one drama for 10pm

CBS has built a sitcom night with a legal drama bolted on at the end. Three comedies fill 8pm to 10pm ET/PT (7pm to 9pm Central), and Cupertino takes the last hour. The best of the lot is Ghosts at 9:01pm, and the schedule gives it a full 59 minutes.

The episode is “Halloween 6: The Mirror – Part One and Part Two”, S06E02, so it is billed as a double-length instalment and is the longest comedy on the night. Ghosts has 88 episodes over five series, with Rose McIver, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Asher Grodman, Rebecca Wisocky and Sheila Carrasco in the cast list. A Halloween episode two days before Halloween is smart scheduling. It faces 9-1-1: Nashville on ABC, Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test on Fox and After the First 48 on A&E. The 8pm pairing

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage opens the night at 8pm with “The Devil’s Interval and a British Stripper”, S03E04, only 31 minutes. It is a sitcom based on Young Sheldon, with Montana Jordan, Emily Osment, Rachel Bay Jones, Will Sasso and Dougie Baldwin listed in the cast, and it has made 66 episodes over three series. It is up against 9-1-1 on ABC and Hell’s Kitchen on Fox, so the sitcom has to work for its audience. Three stars.

At 8:31pm comes Eternally Yours, a vampire comedy with one series and 20 episodes to date, and Ed Weeks, Allegra Rose Edwards, Helen J. Shen, Jaren Lewison and Parker Young in the cast list. The two comedies run back to back, a 31-minute show then a 30-minute one, so the 8pm half-hour is the lead-in that decides whether the second one gets watched. Three stars again.

Cupertino closes the night

Cupertino is a legal drama at 10pm with Mike Colter, Rachel Keller, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Nik Dodani in the cast list. It is the only drama CBS has on the night, and it faces Grey’s Anatomy on ABC, Killer Investigations on A&E and a block of Fox local programming. It shows up on 18, 22 and 29 October, so it is not a nightly fixture. Three stars: the slot suits it, and there is little more to say about it before it airs.
