CBS runs two reality veterans back to back and bets the night on them

CBS has done the simple thing on Wednesday: Survivor from 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central) for 90 minutes, then The Amazing Race for another 90 from 9:30pm. Three hours of competition reality, no filler, and it goes head to head with the live World Series on Fox. If you are not watching baseball, this is the strongest night on broadcast.

Survivor at 8pm ET

The show is in its 50th season and has aired 722 episodes, which is a figure worth sitting with. Very few American series reach that kind of count, and fewer still still command a 90-minute slot in primetime. The extended length is the point: Survivor’s format rewards room, and a full hour and a half is the length at which it plays best. CBS isn’t saying which episode this is, so there is nothing more to say about this particular instalment than that it’s the opener and the pick.

Its competition is the interesting part. Fox has the World Series live in the same slot, ABC has Scrubs, and Bravo has The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. CBS is up against one genuine rival for the audience, and it isn’t the other reality show.

The Amazing Race at 9:30pm ET

“A Fine Line Between Confidence and Stupidity” is the sixth episode of season 39, and it is the second 90-minute block of the night. The Amazing Race has run 32 series and 373 episodes, and it has the rare advantage of being a different kind of reality show from Survivor: movement and travel where the other is about camp and alliances. The pairing is smart, because the two don’t compete with each other for the same viewer. I rate it only a shade under its lead-in, mainly because the second half of a three-hour block is always harder to sit through.

At 9:30pm, only Bravo and Disney Channel start anything in the same window, so it has an easy run.

What else is on

The rest of CBS’s day is the usual structure. CBS Mornings runs 7am to 9am, followed by CBS Mornings Plus. The Price Is Right is at 11am, with The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful and Beyond the Gates running through the early afternoon, then Let’s Make a Deal at 3pm. CBS Evening News is at 6:30pm ET.

After primetime, local programs fill the 11pm hour and Comics Unleashed comes at 11:35pm, with an earlier airing at 12:05am. Funny You Should Ask follows at 12:35am and 1:05am. It’s a modest late slot, and I give it two stars: a filler hour, not a destination.

Bottom line

If you want one thing, make it Survivor. If you have the whole evening, CBS is the rare network whose lineup you can leave running and not regret.
