The CW has given Halloween over to live sport, and the only real choice tonight is whether you want football at 10pm ET (7pm PT) or something else entirely. The network has no scripted show anywhere on the day’s schedule. It is college football, NASCAR and wrestling from lunchtime until after 1am, and a viewer who wanted a Halloween special has come to the wrong channel.

Football bookends the day

College Football appears twice, at noon ET (9am PT) and again at 10pm ET (7pm PT). Each slot is three and a half hours, and that is the pick for the night: the late game is the one that runs against everything else. CBS has 48 Hours, Hallmark has The Spirit of Halloween, Food Network is showing its Halloween Baking Championship, and Discovery has Expedition X. None of that is sport, so for a football fan the 10pm game is the only live option on the dial that doesn’t ask for a decision. Three stars for the late slot, three for the lunchtime one. NASCAR and NXT fill the middle

NASCAR Countdown Live at 3:30pm ET leads into the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series at 4pm ET (1pm PT), a three-hour race broadcast. The series was on here last Saturday too, so this is a regular fixture, not a one-off. Three stars, as a dependable afternoon slot.

WWE NXT takes the 7pm ET hour and runs for three hours. The show has reached 777 episodes across 12 series, and it airs on this channel on three days in the window, so it is a regular here. At 7pm it finishes just as the late football starts, so you can have both: wrestling first, the game at 10pm. That’s three stars from me.

Mornings and the gaps

The morning belongs to Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild, six half hours from 8am to 11am. These are family nature episodes: The Mighty Pachyderms, Zambezi: River of Life, Dog Days, Elephants of Zimbabwe, Best of Chile and Zoo to You. The block repeats the previous Saturday, so it is a fixture and not an event. Two stars, because the series is competent and the slot is filler.

The rest of the schedule is local. Local Programs fills six hours overnight, two hours from 6am and an hour at 11am, which means what you see depends on your station. Nothing national happens between midnight and 8am.

That is the night. If sport is what you want on Halloween, the CW has a full Saturday for you. If it isn’t, other channels are far more in the spirit of the date.
