The CW’s Wednesday primetime is two hours long, and you can watch both without a decision. Police 24/7 at 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central) leads into Private Eyes West Coast at 9pm, and then the network hands the 10pm slot back to your local station for two hours.

That structure is the story. Local Programs fills midnight to 6am, 6am to noon, noon to 6pm, 6pm to 8pm and the final two hours from 10pm. Private Eyes West Coast is the better of the two on paper, and the one we’d mark as the pick. It’s an American drama, and it airs in the 9pm hour against Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on ABC and The Lowdown on FX. Across the window it turns up on three dates, tonight included, so it’s a returning visitor on The CW’s schedule and not a one-off. That’s still a thin recommendation, and two stars is where we land. There isn’t much more to say about a slot we can only describe by its title, and we’d rather say so than invent an argument.

If neither suits, the competition is generous. HBO has The Invite at 9pm, and Shark Tank on ABC covers the 10pm hour that The CW leaves to your local station.

The honest conclusion is that The CW is a short night for a network. Watch the two hours if you like the format, and treat everything after 10pm as your local station’s business.
