TCM on Thursday: Bonnie and Clyde by day, horror by night

TCM has built its Thursday so that the film that matters most is not in primetime. Bonnie and Clyde is on at 4pm ET, and the evening that follows turns to horror and suspense: The Beguiled at 8pm ET, The Sentinel at 10pm ET and I Walked with a Zombie at 11:45pm ET. If you can only catch one thing, make it the 8pm film; if you can catch two, add the one that ends the night.

The Beguiled anchors primetime

The Beguiled is a 1971 film directed by Don Siegel, and the longest programme of the evening at 120 minutes. The genre tags are erotic thriller, drama and LGBTQ-related, and the cast is led by Clint Eastwood, with Geraldine Page, Elizabeth Hartman, Jo Ann Harris and Darleen Carr. It is a strange film to place at 8pm, and that is what makes it worth the slot. Four stars and the pick.

The competition is mostly reality television and procedural drama: 9-1-1 on ABC, The First 48: Rookie Year on A&E, and The Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo. If you want something with a distinct voice, this is the opposite.

The late double: The Sentinel and a 1943 horror

The Sentinel (1977) was directed by Michael Winner and is tagged as a horror and ghost film. Its cast includes Chris Sarandon, Eli Wallach, Christopher Walken, Martin Balsam and John Carradine. It begins at 10pm ET and runs 105 minutes. Three stars: the cast is a pleasure, but it is a mid-70s genre picture and works best if you accept that.

Then, at 11:45pm ET, comes I Walked with a Zombie, a 1943 film by Jacques Tourneur, with James Ellison, Tom Conway, Frances Dee, Edith Barrett and James Bell. It runs only 75 minutes and is tagged horror, fantasy and zombie. It is the best argument for staying up. A 75-minute film ending at 1am ET asks very little, and Tourneur’s reputation is well earned. Five stars.

Bonnie and Clyde in the afternoon

Bonnie and Clyde (1967), directed by Arthur Penn, with Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons and Michael J. Pollard, is on at 4pm ET for two hours. It is easily the best-known film of the day, and it is a shame it falls where most people are still at work. Set a recorder for it. Five stars.

The rest of the day

Overnight is a run of 1970s films: Black Eye at midnight, Black Belt Jones at 2am ET, and Hit Man at 3:30am ET. Black Belt Jones is a 1974 martial arts and action film directed by Robert Clouse, with Jim Kelly, Gloria Hendry, Scatman Crothers, Marla Gibbs and Ted Lange. Hit Man, from 1972, is a blaxploitation film. Both are worth a recording.

The daytime belongs to the 1930s and 40s: Cain and Mabel at 6am ET, Brother Rat and a Baby, Susan and God, Judge Hardy and Son and Tarzan and His Mate at 6pm ET. A mixed bag, and none of it needs to be seen live.
