Showtime gives the whole of primetime to Apocalypse Now Redux

Showtime’s Wednesday is all movies, and primetime is one very long one. Apocalypse Now Redux, the 2001 extended cut of Francis Ford Coppola’s war film, starts at 8pm ET/PT, 7pm Central, and runs 195 minutes. That is the entire evening, and it is the best reason to be here.

It is the pick and the easy five stars. Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall lead the cast, and the film is based on Heart of Darkness. It has aired on this channel on three days in the past two weeks, so the schedule clearly likes it. The long cut is a commitment: nothing else starts until 11:15pm ET, and the opposition at 8pm is Survivor on CBS and The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City on Bravo.

Total Recall (1990) follows at 11:15pm ET with no gap, which makes this a sensible late double bill. Paul Verhoeven directed it and Arnold Schwarzenegger stars. After a film of that weight, an action picture is the right comedown.

Earlier in the day the lineup is more mixed. Forrest Gump (1994) airs at 5:30pm ET, a 150-minute lead-in, and the afternoon pairs When Harry Met Sally… at 1:55pm with You’ve Got Mail at 3:30pm. Overnight, Gangs of New York (2002) runs at 2:50am for anyone awake.
