NBC has one real evening decision, and it is made for you. Sunday Night Football starts at 8:15pm ET (5:15pm PT) and is scheduled for 195 minutes, which is the whole of primetime and a little beyond. Football Night in America opens the evening at 7pm ET (4pm PT) for 75 minutes. If football is your Sunday, NBC is the channel to stay on from 7pm until close to 11:30pm ET, when local programming takes over.

Sunday Night Football is a long-running fixture of the NFL week. The series is 11 seasons old and has reached 227 episodes. It has the evening to itself, and that is its real strength: nothing else on NBC will pull you away. The four stars are for the slot and the commitment behind it. How good the game is will depend on the two teams, and that is out of anyone’s hands.

Football Night in America is the warm-up, and it has a long history of its own, with 228 episodes to date across nine series. A 75-minute pregame show is a lot of talking before kickoff. It is worth tuning in for if you want the injury news and the afternoon’s results in one sitting, and skipping if you only care about the game. Three stars.

The afternoon is the more interesting stretch for anyone who does not care about the NFL. NASCAR Cup Series takes a four-hour block from 2pm ET (11am PT), with Countdown to Green at 1:30pm ET as the lead-in. Before that, Figure Skating gets 90 minutes from noon ET. That is a generous amount of sport for a network that is about to hand the night to football. NASCAR earns three stars on length and slot alone: four hours is a commitment, and only fans of the series will use all of it.

The morning is news and talk. Sunday Today with Willie Geist is on at 8am ET, followed by Meet the Press at 9am. Meet the Press is the one for anyone who follows politics, and three stars reflects a dependable slot more than a special occasion.

The overnight hours are the quiet end of the schedule. Open House Outrageous runs at 1:03am ET, and OpenHouse NYC airs twice, once as a 90-minute block at 1:32am and again at 2:02am for 28 minutes. NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas is at 6:30pm ET, as it is every evening.

If you are choosing a single hour to watch, make it the first hour of Sunday Night Football. If you are not a football viewer, NBC is not your channel on Sunday evening, and the sensible move is to look at the other networks. Fox has The Simpsons at 8pm ET, ABC has Mrs. Doubtfire, and CBS has Marshals at 8:30pm.
