NBC gives you three hours of Chicago and nothing else

NBC’s Wednesday is a single decision made three times: Chicago Med at 8pm, Chicago Fire at 9pm and Chicago P.D. at 10pm ET/PT (7, 8 and 9pm Central). If you like the franchise, the night is settled. If you don’t, there is nothing in primetime to switch to. The best of the three, for me, is the 9pm hour.

Chicago Fire at 9pm ET

Fire is the original, and it shows. It is 15 seasons deep with 295 episodes behind it, and it is the show the other two were built from. Tonight’s instalment is “A Perfect Arson”, the fourth of the season. A series this far in has either gone stale or learned exactly how to hold an hour, and the fact that NBC still gives it the middle of the night suggests the network believes the second. It is also the hinge of the evening, sitting between the other two. Against it, ABC has Who Wants to Be a Millionaire from 9:02pm, which is a very different kind of evening.

Chicago P.D. at 10pm ET

“My Eye, My Call” is the fourth episode of the fourteenth season, and it closes the primetime block. P.D. has 264 episodes and sits in the last slot of the night. It is the one I would pick if I could only watch one hour and wanted something that feels like the end of a night rather than the middle of one. ABC counters with Shark Tank at 10:01pm, so the viewer who wants something lighter has an easy exit, but anyone who has stayed this far probably won’t take it.

Chicago Med at 8pm ET

Med opens the night with “Tomorrow, And Tomorrow, And Tomorrow”, the fourth of its twelfth season. With 219 episodes it is the youngest of the three and the one with the most to prove, since it has to hold the audience for the hours that follow. Its job tonight is to be a reliable opener, and its only real obstacle is the crowded 8pm slot: Survivor is on CBS and the live World Series is on Fox. I rate it a notch below its siblings, which is less a complaint than a reflection of where it sits in the line-up.

The repeat question

All three Chicago shows turn up on exactly two days across the last ten, a week apart, so they are weekly fixtures. Whether tonight’s episodes are fresh, NBC isn’t saying. What can be said is that the fourth episode of each season landing in the same week gives the night a tidy symmetry: the three shows move in step.

After the news

The late slot is The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon at 11:35pm ET, after local programs at 11pm. Early Today and NBC News Daily each appear twice during the day, and the Today franchise fills the morning from 7am. The overnight line-up begins with Late Night with Seth Meyers at 12:37am.

Pick: Chicago Fire, with P.D. a very close second.
