NBC’s Friday is two hours of Dateline with a sitcom warm-up

NBC has given most of its Friday primetime to Dateline NBC. It starts at 9:01pm ET and runs 119 minutes, which makes it the longest programme on the network’s night by a distance and the reason to tune in. Before it comes a half-hour sitcom and a half-hour of Newlyweds, a short run-up to a long main event.

The main event: Dateline NBC

Dateline is a true-crime newsmagazine, and a two-hour block is its natural length. The stories it tells need room to build, and a two-hour slot lets them. The installment tonight is season 35, episode 6. The network isn’t saying what the story is, and I won’t guess.

What can be said is where it sits. At 9pm ET it faces a lot of competition for the same sort of viewer: 20/20 on ABC starts a minute earlier, for two hours, and The First 48 is on A&E. If you watch these shows as a habit, you probably have a loyalty already. If you’re choosing fresh, the one-minute head start from ABC doesn’t matter much; what matters is whether you want a two-hour sit. Dateline is the pick because it is the programme that most clearly justifies its slot, but I’d give it three stars rather than four: it is dependable, not distinctive.

The warm-up: Happy’s Place at 8pm

Happy’s Place is a sitcom starring Reba McEntire alongside Belissa Escobedo, Melissa Peterman and Rex Linn. Tonight’s installment is called “Skeletons in the Closet,” which is a fittingly seasonal title for the night before Halloween weekend. It runs 30 minutes, then hands over to Newlyweds.

The 8pm slot is a hard one. Fox has the World Series, CBS has Sheriff Country and ABC has Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. A half-hour sitcom is the kind of programme that can pick up a viewer who wants something short and undemanding, and that is where it does well. Three stars.

Newlyweds at 8:30pm

Newlyweds is the thinnest part of the night. It fills the half hour at 8:30pm ET and runs 31 minutes, and NBC isn’t telling us much about it. Against it are Blade II on Bravo, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on Freeform and Christine on IFC, so the lead-in from Happy’s Place is the main thing in its favor. Two stars: not a bad slot, just nothing in it that I can vouch for.

The overnight and late shows

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is at 11:35pm ET for 62 minutes. Late Night with Seth Meyers follows at 12:37am, and Top Story with Tom Llamas at 2:13am. Early Today runs three times from 3am. The Today show starts at 7am for two hours, with Today 3rd Hour at 9am and Today with Jenna & Sheinelle at 10am.

The short version

Stay for Dateline if you like the format and have the evening free. Happy’s Place is a fine 30-minute opener, and Newlyweds is filler you can skip. If you want baseball, Fox has the World Series.
