HGTV skips the Halloween rush and hands the night to My Lottery Dream Home

On the eve of Halloween, HGTV is the quiet option. While AMC runs Halloween at 9pm ET and FX has Hocus Pocus 2 on at the same hour, HGTV puts one show in front of you from late afternoon until 10pm ET: My Lottery Dream Home, eleven half-hour episodes in a row from 4:30pm ET. If you want a house-shopping evening with no commitment, this is it, and the 8pm ET episode (Single Mom Defies the Odds, season 20, episode 2) is the one to start from.

That 8pm ET slot is also where the competition is thickest. It sits against the World Series on Fox, The First 48 on A&E, Gold Rush on Discovery and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on Food Network. Nobody is watching My Lottery Dream Home to follow the baseball, so the choice is simple. It’s a half-hour format, which means it works as background while dinner happens, and a bad episode is over in 30 minutes. At 8:30pm ET comes BFF Lottery, then an untitled 9pm ET episode and Second Chance Love in Boston at 9:30pm ET.

The thing to notice is how much of the day is the same show. The episode numbers earlier in the evening run from season 14 to season 20, so HGTV is dipping across the back catalog rather than stringing a season together. That suits a Friday. It does mean the lottery winners and their budgets blur after the third hour, and anyone planning to watch more than two in a row should expect the format to repeat itself.

Earlier, A Very Haunted Renovation (2026) is the seasonal curiosity. It airs as a 90-minute film at 4am, 9:30am and 3pm ET, with 60-minute slots at 11am, noon, 1pm and 2pm ET in between. The 3pm ET showing is the one that makes sense for most people, and it’s the only real nod to the date on the channel.

At 10pm ET the schedule changes to House Hunters, with a second half-hour at 10:30pm ET. It faces Halloween Kills on Syfy at 10:30pm ET, which is not a close contest if you’re in the mood for something dark, and a fair one if you’ve had enough of it. House Hunters International fills the overnight and the early morning hours.

Verdict: a comfortable, undemanding Friday. Pick the 8pm ET episode and let the rest run.
