HGTV’s primetime has one real hour, and it’s at 9pm

Wednesday night on HGTV is two half-hours of the network’s most dependable format, then a single hour that has to carry the evening. That hour is Sin City Rehab at 9pm ET/PT (8pm Central), and it is the pick. It is the longest block of primetime and the only one that isn’t a fixture of the schedule, which counts for something on a night when House Hunters fills the first 60 minutes.

House Hunters opens primetime at 8pm and 8:30pm, and it has already been on all evening: four episodes sit in the 6pm to 8pm stretch. The series has run 13 seasons and 538 episodes, a scale that explains why HGTV can stack it without anyone blinking. It is comfortable viewing, but it is also the show you have probably seen on the channel at some point today. It is up against Survivor on CBS at 8pm, which is where the competition for attention actually lies.

House of Ali closes primetime at 10pm, opposite Shark Tank on ABC and Ghost Adventures on Discovery. It is the least certain slot of the night. Without a track record on this channel to point to, I’d treat it as a sample rather than an appointment.

Sin City Rehab has plenty of rivals at 9pm: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on ABC and Hocus Pocus on Freeform among them. If you want a home-renovation hour rather than a movie, this is the place to be.

Earlier in the day the channel is in full marathon mode. Love It or List It runs from 6am to 11am, five episodes back to back, and 100 Day Dream Home takes over from 2pm to 6pm. A Very Haunted Renovation turns up twice in the small hours, at 4am and 5am, which suits a week with Halloween close. Late night returns to House Hunters at 11pm and 11:30pm ET.
