HBO saves its best slot for a late thriller

HBO’s evening is two films, and the later one is the better bet. The Housemaid, a 2025 thriller directed by Paul Feig, starts at 10:45pm ET and runs 134 minutes, so it finishes just before 1am. It is the pick, partly because it faces almost nothing: only Tales from the Crypt on IFC starts near it. Late, long and mostly uncontested, it is the night’s clearest case for staying up.

The Invite comes first, at 8:55pm ET. It is a 2026 comedy directed by Olivia Wilde, who also appears in it alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, and it is based on The People Upstairs. At 110 minutes it runs straight into the thriller with no gap. It has aired on three days in the past two weeks and The Housemaid on three as well, so neither is a one-off. Against it, ABC has Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Bravo has Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, so the audience for a comedy is not short of options.

The 8pm hour goes to The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story, a 55-minute entry that airs every day in this window and works as a filler before the film. Elsewhere the channel runs an overnight horror pair, Evil Dead Rise at 2:55am and Evil Dead Burn at 4:33am, and The Last Samurai (2003) at 10:13am.
