Discovery has given Halloween night a six-hour Expedition X marathon, and it is the most deliberate seasonal scheduling among the big cable channels. It starts at 6pm ET and does not stop until midnight: six episodes, one every hour, with “Terror on Doll Island” (S01E03) leading primetime at 8pm.

The order is the thing to notice. The episodes come from seasons one, two and five in no sequence at all: S02E05 at 6pm, S01E06 at 7pm, S01E03 at 8pm, S05E03 at 9pm, S02E03 at 10pm and S01E07 at 11pm. There is no story to follow, so it is a night you can join at any hour. Titles like “Mexico’s Haunted Cenotes” and “Terror of the Bell Witch” show the theme. Expedition X is a 2020 series, and it also aired on the 18th and the 22nd, so some of this will be familiar.

My pick is the 8pm hour, simply because it is the first in primetime and the best entry point. It faces the World Series on Fox, Storage Wars: Scariest Lockers on A&E, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife on FX. Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship will take the family audience, so Discovery is playing for the viewer who wants the spooky and the factual together.

The afternoon is five straight hours of Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction, 1pm to 6pm ET, so the channel’s theme is clear all day. Mornings are MythBusters, including “Fright Night” (S13E04) at noon, the only other nod to the date.
