Discovery’s Thursday evening belongs to Dirty Jobs, six hours of it from 6pm ET through to midnight, and the case for staying put is simple: nothing else on the dial is as consistent. The 8pm episode, “Bug Detective”, is the pick.

The show has eight seasons and 169 episodes behind it, so Discovery has plenty of material to choose from. The channel has picked episodes from seasons 4, 5, 6 and 10 for tonight, and the set has the look of a deliberate mix: “High-Rise Window Washer” and “Spider Pharm” at 6pm and 7pm, “Bug Detective” and “Fossil Hunter” in primetime, then “Doomsday Seed Banker” at 10pm and “Deer Urine Farmer; Necropsy” at 11pm. Mike Rowe fronts the series. The titles alone tell you the show’s appeal: the job comes first, and the jobs are not glamorous.

It is not short of competition. At 8pm ET, Hell’s Kitchen is on Fox and The Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo, with 9-1-1 on ABC. Dirty Jobs is the calmer option and the one with the strongest identity of the lot.

The rest of the day is easy to skip. Hustlers Gamblers Crooks fills the early morning, Caught! runs for five straight hours from 10am, and Rocky Mountain Wreckers takes the afternoon. Overnight is Expedition Unknown, Ghost Adventures and Mysteries of the Abandoned. Fine for recording.
