ABC’s Monday is simple: Dancing with the Stars takes the whole of the first half of primetime, Shark Tank takes the second, and Disney Night is the reason to tune in at 8pm ET. Two hours is a long commitment, and NBC’s two-hour Voice at 9pm ET is the only other network show of that length.

Dancing with the Stars: Disney Night, 8pm ET

This is episode nine of season 35, and the theme is the kind a dance competition lives for. Disney Night gives the production an obvious costume, music and choreography brief, and the title alone tells you what the evening is built around. The show has now run to 29 series and more than 450 episodes, so a themed night like this is part of how it keeps a long-running format interesting.

The competition is stiffer than it looks. At 8pm ET, FBI starts on CBS, Name That Tune on Fox, and Below Deck and Holiday Baking Championship on cable. NBC is handing the slot to a sitcom opener. Anyone who wants a dance competition has an easy choice. Anyone who wants a procedural has a different one.

I give it four stars. Two hours is a stretch, and the middle can sag, but a theme night is where the show is most likely to deliver something worth watching live.

Shark Tank: Beast Mode, 10pm ET

At 10pm ET the schedule shows episode one of season 18, which makes it a season opener, and the episode title is Beast Mode. The format is long established: reality television built around entrepreneurs and the panel of investors, with Kevin O’Leary, Barbara Corcoran, Daymond John, Robert Herjavec and Mark Cuban among its cast. The show has aired more than 120 episodes.

An opener on the night after a two-hour dance show is a sensible bit of scheduling, since the audience is already on the channel. The rest of the late slot is thin. CBS has Harlan Coben’s Final Twist, Fox has local programming, and Bravo has Watch What Happens Live. Three stars: dependable rather than urgent.
